CLOSE THE SALE WITH FLOWERS

In a study done by the Society of American Florists they found that “Flowers Lead Toward “Better Bottom Line”

“Naturalizing the workplace can lead to more productive workers and a better bottom line,” Joanna Poncavage tells readers, touting SAF’s Impact of Flowers & Plants on Workplace Productivity Study.

Recent scientific research at Texas A&M University found that ideas, creative performance and problem solving improve substantially in places with flowers and plants,” Poncavage says.

In 2003, SAF partnered with an internationally recognized research team at Texas A&M University to learn how flowers and plants in the workplace impact productivity and problem solving.

“The Texas A&M research is a great sales tool to help convince businesses why they need flowers,” says Jennifer Sparks, SAF’s vice president of marketing. “Commercial accounts represent a profitable market for florists, and while they do require some upfront efforts, the long-term rewards are significant.”

In fact, I have had several customers tell me that flowers do the trick!

We have an attorney who sends flowers to clients to thank them for their business and for their referrals. They always call and thank her and oftentimes will end up being our customers.

One customer was trying to get an appointment with the Human Resource Director of a Big Company and he could not get past the gatekeeper. He called for about the 5th time and was again brushed off.  While speaking with the assistant he noticed she was sneezing a little and asked if she was okay. She told him she was just getting over a cold. He called my shop and ordered a “chicken soup” arrangement and had it delivered that day. Needless to say, he got the appointment and subsequently the business.

FLOWERS WORK!

Here’s what one satisfied customer has to say about Eden Florist work:
“On behalf of the faculty and staff of Northwest Christian Academy I just want to say a BIG THANK YOU! The arrangement is beautiful. Blossom and I will have the vase for a long time. You will be seeing and hearing form us in the near future.” Marcia Davis

So if you were wondering whether or not flowers would help you close the sale… this study should give you at least one more reason to SEND FLOWERS.

Sympathy Flowers ARE Important

Confused about whether or not to send flowers to express your sympathy?

In the article “Avoiding Confusion” Kim Stacey says “The traditional funeral ritual plays a key role in the grieving process. As tradition has given way to new forms and behaviors, still the most common funeral-related ritual, is the sending, receiving and viewing of flowers.”

In a study entitled, “The Role of Flowers and Plants in the Bereavement Process,” funded jointly by the American Floral Endowment and the Society of American Florists Information Committee, more than half of the bereaved surveyed strongly agreed that flowers were a critical component of the funeral ritual that helped them deal with their grief.

She goes on to say, “At the funeral service, flowers also help brighten a somber environment and provide a topic of conversation and a tranquil focal point.”

More important than the role of flowers in keeping conversation going, the study further demonstrated that because of their soothing qualities, sympathy flowers displayed at funerals actually had a positive impact on the emotional well-being of the bereaved.

After the funeral service, arrangements and plants act as keepsakes to brighten the home and in the case of flowering plants, can serve as a living memorial to the deceased. Not only that, caring for the plants can provide hours of pleasure and an emotional connection to the missing loved one.”

New Flower Study Unearths Buyers Generational Preferences

The Society of American Florists conducted research to find out what flowers “mean” to different generations. Here’s an excerpt of that study:

“SAF’s Generations of Flowers consumer research study, completed in January 2009, explores the motivations and barriers of how different age groups perceive, buy, and use flowers and floral outlets. Three generations of consumers were assessed through qualitative and quantitative measures: Generation Y (ages 18-30), Generation X (31-44), and Baby Boomers (45-60). The study methodology included:

Interviews with generational and gift giving research giants, Iconoculture and Roper
Two online focus groups of 57 individuals
Online survey of 1,557 flower consumers”

Key Inisghts Included Flowers and Gifting, Flower Purchase Behaviors and compared Boomers, Gen X’ers and Gen Y feelings toward flowers in general.

For instance when it comes to floral purchases

Gen Y is “most likely to purchase flowers in person and deliver flowers themselves. This echoes a “personalization” trend in gifting characteristic of this generation.”

And Gen Y is also “more likely to purchase flowers to impress guests in their home, significantly higher than other generations. This indicates an opportunity to reposition the value of flowers for the younger consumer.”

Compared to Gen X which “most likely purchases flowers as a traditional holiday/occasion gift for someone else, as a “just because” pick-me-up gift, and for home decoration.”

The Baby Boomer Generation “is significantly more likely than other generations to keep flowers in their consideration set when purchasing a gift, and to find flowers appropriate for a broad range of gifting situations.”
